The Concierge: How to Plan for a Day of Slow Travel in El Zonte

A slow day, somewhere in the middle of your week. The body has had enough, the mornings have been early, the sun has been hot. Here at Al Suave House, we excel at helping our guests plan out days like these. What follows is a simple preview of an itinerary we'd put together for you, as a guest of Al Suave House.

A quiet morning by the ocean, a movement class at Al Suave Wellness, a few good bites in our favorite spots and more. Nothing scheduled too tightly, nothing heavy demanded of the body.

6 AM. The beach, before anyone else

Start at the beach. Not for surfing this time, just a nice morning walk. Sunrise lands somewhere between 5:30 and 6 here depending on the season, and the first hour after first light is the only one in El Zonte that belongs to almost no one. You'll find a few fishermen sorting nets, a couple of dogs playing while their owners ride the waves, and beautiful soft Pacific light.

8 AM. A quick snack at Soya

If you want a quick snack early, Soya Nutribar is the option. They have a small shop on the Al Suave Wellness property and press their juices fresh each morning. Their Energy Juice one with ginger does more for a slow morning than coffee ever has, and the Multi-Vitamina, their hibiscus tonic, fuels you up without anything heavy on the stomach. The right fuel before a class.

Canegue Café opens a bit later in the morning and is a heavier meal, so we'd recommend saving it for after class rather than before. We'll come back to it.

9 AM. Movement at Al Suave Wellness

The 9 o'clock class is the anchor of the day. Al Suave Wellness sits beside the house but runs as its own project, separate from us, open to the public. Three different classes rotate through the schedule, and the one you take depends on what your body is asking for that morning. If you're feeling meditative, Vinyasa Flow with Katrin is the move. It's a slower practice with breath linked to movement, and a lot of attention paid to transitions. You leave it longer in the spine and quieter in the head. Right for a slow day where you don't want to be put through anything. If you're feeling a little more dynamic, Power Yoga with Iris will give you that. A stronger practice with standing sequences and longer holds, you'll notice how it builds heat through the body without breaking it. Still yoga, but you'll know you took it.

And if you're looking for a real workout to balance out the rest of the day, return at 4 PM for our more intense movement classes. Intervals at high intensity, with selections ranging from HIIT to boxing, these will give you back energy by spending some first. We'd recommend it on a day when the morning has already been restful, like this one.

Whatever class you take, the Soya Nutribar market is right there afterward. Grab a Hierba Roja juice, on the way out, you'll thank us later.

11 AM. A bite at Palma Zonte

Walk over to Palma Zonte for a late breakfast or an early lunch. It's an easygoing shack with fresh, balanced food. Bowls are the move, with vegetarian options like falafel and tofu, or traditional proteins like chicken, beef, and pork, so there's something for everyone. The Tahini Chipotle dressing is to die for, one of our favorites. Sit out front, and if you want the perfect shot for Instagram, the facade of the shack is one of El Zonte's viral photo spots.

If you skipped Soya earlier and want something heavier, Canegue is the alternative. The small café in front of the surf hostel just past our wall, run by Oli, a French Canadian chef and friend of the house. The menu is small and changes often, but his coffee is the best in town and whatever he's serving that day will hit just right. Worth knowing that Canegue is a morning operation, open early and into brunch, then closed the rest of the day.

1 PM. Hammock time

In true Salvadoran fashion, the hour after lunch is for the hammock. Find one somewhere and nest in it for a while. If you're staying at Al Suave House, ask Javier from our team to set one up for you anywhere in the house, or in one of the bedrooms' private gardens for a more secluded nap surrounded by nature. The treehouse's net is our guests' favorite for lounging or reading, and the view from up there will reset most things.

3 PM. Coffee at Surf Hub

If you want some coffee in the afternoon, grab a cup at the Surf Hub café. In their own words, home of the café loco. They dial in their espressos just right. It's also a great place for remote work, but that's not why we're here today, so leave your laptop at home.

6 PM. The thermal experience at Al Suave Wellness

Come back to Al Suave Wellness in the early evening. The hot and cold thermal experience is what we call the cycle of sauna, cold plunge, sauna, plunge. Twenty minutes in the sauna is enough to build real heat, three minutes in the plunge is enough to reset everything, and two or three rounds is the right number. The body finishes the day in a state nothing else can give it.

The space is worth knowing in the evening specifically. The roof has openings designed to frame the palm trees and the sky, and once the sun goes down, the warm lighting takes over. The whole place feels softer and slower than it does in daylight. Stay a while after your last plunge. There's no rush. Plug into our Sonos system and ease into the night.

8 PM. A chill dinner

For dinner, we'd recommend La Cajita Kitchen's new place. They have a deck overlooking the ocean with El Zonte's river to the right, which makes it perfect for a chill meal. Covana at Puro Surf is also a good option. The place gets packed for breakfast and lunch, but it's usually pretty quiet in the evening, which makes it great for a more lo-fi meal.
